POSITION OVERVIEW

Position Title: Chief Operations Officer (COO)
Location: Remote
Reports To: Executive Director
Reporting Structure: Monthly reporting and strategic review sessions
Compensation: Volunteer position (unpaid) with reimbursement of work-related expenses
Commitment: Estimated 15-25 hours per week

 

ROLE PURPOSE

The Chief Operations Officer will serve as a key strategic partner to the Executive Director, responsible for driving operational excellence, digital transformation, and sustainable growth across The Learnaholics Academy. This role requires a dynamic leader who can translate vision into action, building scalable systems and processes that support our expanding reach across Africa.

The COO will oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring efficiency, quality, and alignment with our mission. This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced operations leader passionate about education and social impact to shape the future of learning on the continent.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Leadership & Digital Transformation
  • Lead the organization’s digital transformation agenda, identifying and implementing technology solutions that enhance program delivery, operational efficiency, and learner experience.
  • Develop and execute operational strategies that align with organizational goals and support sustainable growth.
  • Create and launch innovative, sustainable initiatives that expand the Academy’s reach and impact.
  • Establish metrics and systems for measuring operational performance and program effectiveness.
Operational Management
  • Oversee day-to-day operations across all programs and functional areas
  • Build and optimize operational processes, systems, and workflows to ensure scalability and efficiency
  • Manage resource allocation and ensure effective utilization of organizational assets
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams and ensure seamless collaboration across departments

Technology & Learning Systems

  • Oversee the selection, implementation, and optimization of Learning Management Systems (LMS) and educational technology platforms.
  • Ensure technology infrastructure supports current needs and future growth
  • Drive innovation in educational delivery through strategic use of EdTech solutions
  • Monitor emerging trends in educational technology and recommend adoption where appropriate

 

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Required Qualifications

Education – Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Operations Management, Education, Technology, or related field (Master’s degree preferred)

Experience – Minimum 2-5 years of progressive leadership experience in operations management – Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following similar roles: – Operations Director or COO or Key Executive in educational institutions, EdTech companies, or NGOs – Program Director managing multi-country or large-scale educational initiatives – Chief of Staff in mission-driven organizations with operational responsibilities – Head of Operations in technology-enabled service organizations – Director of Digital Transformation in education or nonprofit sectors – Senior Operations Manager in social enterprises or impact organizations.

Technical Competencies – Strong knowledge of Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Moodle, Canvas, Google Classroom, or similar platforms – Proven experience with educational technology tools and digital learning platforms – Understanding of EdTech ecosystem, trends, and best practices – Proficiency in project management tools and operational software – Data-driven approach to decision-making with strong analytical capabilities.

Leadership & Management – Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire teams in remote/distributed environments – Track record of implementing digital transformation initiatives – Experience building operational systems and processes from the ground up or optimizing existing ones – Strong strategic thinking combined with hands-on execution capabilities – Experience managing budgets and financial operations.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Additional Experience (Optional) – Experience in social entrepreneurship or social enterprise operations – Background in the African education landscape and understanding of regional challenges – Experience scaling organizations or programs across multiple countries – Track record of launching new initiatives or products in the education sector.

Language Skills – Bilingual or multilingual capabilities are advantageous but not required – English proficiency (written and spoken) is essential – Additional African languages (French, Swahili, Arabic, Portuguese) are a plus.
